Molecular Biology is going around computing and informatics in these days. Obtaining data is easy and cheap, processing data is hard and expensive to do and learn. A molecular biologist have to be able to understand what he/she produced. Otherwise he/she is a pipetting robot. Informatics and computing is what you have to learn, work harder.
The course was interesting for me, but i wanted to go further in computing. I felt like it was not enough to learn. I wanted to learn more methodological way, the theoretic part was boring for me, but i know the part is important to understand, even so, it was boring.
The professor tried to teach but only interested people showed attention. The way professor tried was good but people didnt get the roadmap, maybe, he can explain more. Almost everyone was looking a easy way to learn and didnt want to understand core. The math part could be more fun.
The core is important for scientists.
Computing in Molecular Biology course was really hard to understand for us. In first year I failed with FF, then next year I passed with AA. I was able to pass when I understand the purpose of the computational methods, how important they are and how can we use it in molecular biology. It is important because a lot of people did not understand the what is going on. The hard part is to understand the purpose and the technical thing, that is, the coding part.
My recommendations for the new students are:
- There are a lot of document in Turkish on the internet. You can Google everything
- Do not forget asking questions
- Homework are very good practices for exam and to understanding the course
- Teamwork is always a win, work with your friend
- Computer of University sometimes do not work, If you have an computer bring it for lesson. If you do not have computer you can use computer of ‘Serbest Kullanım Odası’ -Computer Lab Building 2nd floor, This computers better than which is in class.

The course content and problems are very educational for beginner students but the main problem is that they have no perspective about computational sciences they have just thinking passing exam and move on (Still valid for every course by the way). Another problem is the language I think, because most people are stranger to nomenclature, they did not understand what they are doing.
My recommendation to students who consider taking the course is bringing the own laptop to the classroom cause computer lab is not very useful if they do not bring own laptop and computers does not work properly in the computer lab, they will lose attention to the class.
Everything about the course is depends on students behaviour and I think that the lecturer makes a great effort for teaching so if they do not want to learn they will lose themselves.
This course was so interesting for me. I really didn’t like computers and I didn’t know anything about course and programing skills. This course was so much useful for me. I could understand your expression and your body language but it was so fast for me and also I was need to break time for my understanding because everything was new and hard for me, so understanding was hard.
I recommend to new students, they should make quizzes, it is really important for understanding and really useful everything if they want high marks or really understand the coding, programming. they should do practice so much not only during lesson and they should try their own examples.
I give the lesson 4,5 (the break time 0,5 point for me :))

Bu dersleri, bölümümüzde almaya başlayan ilk öğrencilerden biri olduğumu belirtmek isterim. Derslerin hem ilk defa verilmeye başlanması, hem de hocamıza yabancı olmamız sebebiyle derslerin beni korkutup, zorladığını itiraf etmeliyim. Bunun yanında hocamızın da zorlanmadan etkili bir biçimde öğrenemeyeceğimize olan inancı ,- ki bugün bunun ne kadar doğru bir bakış açısı olduğunu görebiliyorum - benim korkumu daha da arttırmış ve motivasyonumu düşürmüştü. Daha sonraları çok zorlanmamın asıl sebebinin, derslere düzenli olarak gelmemek olduğu acıyla olsa da görmüş bulunuyorum. Bu yüzden sizlere naçizane tavsiyem, mümkün olduğunca ders kaçırmamaya özen göstermeniz olur.
Computing in Molecular Biology I dersini geçmeme rağmen; dersin ikinci kısmından maalesef derse karşı sergilediğim sorumsuzluklar yüzünden geçemedim. Bunun sonucunda da korkularım katlanarak arttı ve ders son sınıfın bitiminde “Tek Ders Sınavı”na kaldı. Bu sınava hazırlanırken, bize her zaman destek olan ve sınav gününe kadar bütün işlerini bırakıp, istisnasız her gün sabahtan akşama kadar bize; Computing’de başarılı olabilmek için nasıl düşünmemiz gerektiğini öğreten, etkili bir şekilde öğrenebilmemiz için yanında bolca pratik yapma şansı veren yine sevgili Andres hocamız oldu. Bu süreçte çok üzülerek gördüğüm gerçek; aslında derslere düzenli olarak katılmanın, pratik yapmanın ve en önemlisi çekinmeden soru sormanın ne kadar önemli olduğudur. Bir kere öğrenmeye ve pratik yapmaya başlayınca bir dersin bu kadar eğlenceli olabileceğini hiç düşünmemiştim ama ciddi anlamda o çok korktuğum dersin aslında bir oyun kadar eğlenceli olduğunu gördüm. Hocamızın da sorulara son derece açık bir insan olduğunu da belirtmeliyim ki bu bizler için büyük bir şans.
Tabi ki bu dersleri seçerken en önemli etken hepimizin bildiği bir gerçek, moleküler biyolojide bilgisayarın önemidir. Yine bildiğimiz gibi, yaptığımız deneyler, elde ettiğimiz veriler , düzgün bir şekilde analiz edilip anlamlı bir çıkarıma dönüştürülmediği sürece hiçbir önem arz etmemektedirler. Şimdi elbette tercih sizlerin ancak bu derslerin bizler için çok önemli olduğunu göz önüne alarak ve tahmin ettiğim üzere okulda dolaşan korkulu senaryoları bir kenara bırakarak, karar vermeniz sizlerin yararınıza olacaktır.
